Die Kompaktbauweise wurde den neuen Anforderungen der Raumstationen sowie den Mutterschiffen der Flotte angepasst. Die Graf Spee und die Schiffe ihrer Klasse sollten nur für den Nachschub der Flotte sorgen sowie schnell sein.
Daher kommen diese Schiffe auch mit nur 12 Mann Besatzung aus.
